30 Word of the year ideas: Why bother, what’s our word and a fun printable

What IS the point of this New Year, New Year that we are bombarded with from the moment that any New Year starts. It is a marketing message that prevails pretty much everything that is landing into your inbox at the moment. Ways to get healthier, lose weight, focus more on your mental health, spend more time with family, do less work; the list goes on. It is enough to crack you up before the year has even started. That’s why we don’t do New Year resolutions on KiddyCharts. We have a word of the year. We have done this for the last three years. We have loads of word of the year ideas, so why not join us this year, and break that cycle?

We are still standing so perhaps it works.

It works for us, and so we thought we would share it with you, and see if it worked for you too? We’d love to hear from you if you have a Word of the Year, let us know what it is. We love hearing from our readers. Don’t forget to sign up to our free Time to Pee membership too, for fun ideas and inspiration for you and the kids.

So – what’s this idea all about?

What do we mean by Word of the Year?

Rather than make a resolution, which can be demoralising when you break them, just pick a word. Sometimes, that resolution is faltering by the third week of the year. If you have a word to focus on, with your interpretations of it, then there is wiggle room. There are also 365 days to build a plan around that word too, and what it means to YOU.

Let’s try not be drawn into the marketing message of having to change something about ourselves to be happy, whether it is our weight, our exercise regime, our diet, and so on.

We don’t need external confirmation that we are awesome.

It is important to learn to love ourselves for who we are, complete with all our flaws. Our flaws make us unique. And unique is gorgeous.

If you are happy. You are perfect the way you are.

With this in mind, perhaps there ARE things that YOU want to change for YOU.

Not because someone has told you now is the time to be smaller, brighter and faster, but because YOU WANT to do it.

That’s where our word comes in, pick one that fits you, and what will make you happier about yourself.

Something that comes from within.

What are our Word of the Year thoughts?

This is totally personal. It is about you, and what you want to change in your life. Not because someone else told you, but because it is important to you and your own wellbeing.

The word could be anything at all, and mean one thing to you, and something else to another person that picks that very same word.

It can be hard to come up with ideas for a word, we know.

Here is ours:

Glitter.

Now that is open to interpretation, so this is ours, but you could pick the same word and it means something completely different:

  • Glitter has always represented fun, so that’s what we mean, more fun and sparkle in our lives,
  • Glitter things always make us smile, so we aren’t going to be afraid to buy glitter things anymore. My Amazon basket already has a few glittery things in. We’ve got Gin, leggings, glitter ball fairy lights for the study, and even a glittery choice for a new Rose Gold Apple laptop, and finally
  • It does NOT mean more glitter in crafts. Sorry to all those craft bloggers out there, but clearing up glitter from the floor isn’t on my list of musts for the year. Glitter pens on the other hand…. 🤣

All that from a word.
