Winter activities for kids: 5 ways to warm up on cold winter days with the kids

As much as we complain about the weather in this country, there is nothing quite like a crisp, British chill to get you in the mood for a cuddly day with the kids. But what winter activities are there inside, when its too cold to venture out, even with your hat and gloves on? What are YOUR favourite things to do on a cold winter’s day to help you and the children warm up?

We have always loved the early evenings in the winter, when the nights draw in and the kids look out the window to watch the stars waking up high above them. Sometimes, it’s the simple moments in your child’s life that leave the most lasting impression.

Our favourite activities on a cold winter’s day are:

Faces in the window

Using your breath on the car windows (or in our attic which is always cold!) to create a place to draw your favourite character…though it does seem impossible not to start with a smiley face, right?

Hot chocolate sipping

Making a hot chocolate with a few sneaky mini marshmallows to add that extra special taste to the drink. As the kids get older, they love to make it themselves too.

Snowflake magic

Making snowflakes to hang up on the window – I try to resist craft at all times, but my daughter is forcing us to embrace all things glitter. You can create the most beautiful designs with paper, but Martha Stewart, is much better at explaining this than me. Not as wonderful as Mother Nature, but just as delightful for a child.

Mars Bar mayhem

Dressing up in hats, scarf and gloves inside and playing the Mars Bar game – if you have to wear them outside, why not have a spot of fun with them inside as well?

Shadow play

Using the opportunity of the darker evenings to shadow play on the walls in the children’s bedrooms, or to play with torches under the bed. Its is amazing what world one can create with a bit of light and a lot of imagination. Children will conjure anything from Dragons to Wizards in moments.

Family fun by the fire

Sitting in front of our fire and playing board games: there is nothing like a fire to get into the winter snuggly moments. Board games are perfect for warming up the grey cel, so why not warm your toes at the same time?
