Camilla and Charles seen out last minute baby gift shopping! #RoyalBaby

Preparing for a new baby isn’t easy, and you are bound to find yourself rushing about at the last minute getting prepared for the new arrival. This can be particularly true if you are a grand-parent or relative and perhaps haven’t thought ahead as much as you might as you are busy doing grand-parent-y things, like helping your mum be Queen…

Charles and Camilla obviously hadn’t thought it through either. Fancy popping into Mothercare to check out the test Philips Avent gear only a few days before the royal baby is due…what were they up to? Seems to have caused quite a stir as well….

But what should they be considering buying for Princess Kate and Prince William on the birth of their second baby? We have some ideas to help both the parents and the little brother or sister for George to settle in very well in the royal household….

Baby bouncer

Unfortunately, as every mum with more than one child knows, the second kiddo will be spending a good deal of time waiting for you to deal with the first born! George is pretty mobile, and I can bet you, pretty demanding. A baby bouncer to pop the little one in while you fend off the latest tantrum from the oldest is a must! My little Stuntboy spent a good deal of his formative year in the bouncer, while I tried to wrestle with his elder sister’s stubborn nature ;-)

Even more muslins

It is impossible not to have a baby without your house being full of muslins. You need them to throw over the shoulder when you hold your child in case they decide now is the best time to throw up on you…you need them to clear up said bodily fluids, and you need them to clear up pretty much anything that comes out of you or your child during the early years of parenting. In fact, you will need more when you have double the trouble! My children are now 7 and 9 and I still trip over them regularly; the muslins not the kids I mean….

All those muslins are looking a little tired now, BUT they are no less essential. We just use them for clearing up different messes, like milk and cereal in the mornings when my kids insist on getting breakfast for themselves.

Heavy duty baby monitoring

When you have your first, you buy a baby monitor, and jump up at ever sound and emanates from its dinky little speakers.

When the second comes along, you need a baby monitor that will almost drag you out of bed to attend to the second child because you are so knackered after looking after a toddler and a small person during the day. You need a bells and whistles baby monitor that just stops short of shouting in your left ear to get you out of bed. Even better, a video one, so you can actually see if you need to bother to move….

Soothers

We tried with a soother when ours were little, and it just didn’t work – we couldn’t get them to take to it, but we oh so wished they had. Stuntboy was tough to wean off his thumb…it is a lot easy to take away a soother or a dummy than to detach your four-year old from their own thumb. He had reflux; and so sucking was a necessity for him. If you find your little one likes a good suck, do try to start with the soother first. I highly recommend it.

Of course, breast or bottle feeding is a good way to give the little one their heart’s desire of a good suck. Whichever way you decide to go though, what’s best for you is best for them. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. *gets off soap box*

Clothes pegs and cocktail sticks

OK, so that’s not a usual suggestion for you for a new mum…but if your toddler doesn’t sleep well and then you get a newborn thrown into the mix, you are going to NEED those cocktail sticks to prop up your eyelids. As for the clothes peg, you’ll have forgotten how bad the smell of newborn nappies is. I am afraid you are bound to have done, as otherwise we would never have another child again ;-)

If all else fails…start singing

Give up and hire Julie Andrews….she’s quite good at this type of thing – it is amazing what she can pull from her magical carpet bag…

I wonder if Charles and Camilla managed to get any of this? Bet they have a direct line to Mary Poppins, perhaps she is even waiting inside the Lindo as we speak….
