DIY Glitter Tipped Feathers

Kids love feathers, and they are so versatile - why not give them a bit of sparkle to ad to displays, dress up - anything. Feathers are perfect for kids - and glitter tipped feathers even better!

If your kids are anything like mine, you can’t take a walk down the road without coming home with a fistful of feathers. To them, precious treasure collected from a day out. But in reality, unless you like somewhere where you happen to have exotic birds, they’re likely to be plain, dull and not very inspiring – more often than not grey pigeon feathers.

But there’s a really simple way to turn them into something beautiful and magical and this craft is so easy even the smallest of children can do it.

Glittered feathers are on trend, and soon you’ll have a gorgeous collection to add to flower displays; make dream catchers with; use as decoration on gift wrapping; make headdresses with; turn into quill pens…

You’ll need:

  • Feathers
  • Some glue (I used plain PVA white glue)
  • Glitter of your choice
  • Brush

Firstly wash your collected feathers in hot soapy water to remove any dirt, parasites and some of the natural oil. Ordinary dish washing-up liquid is fine. Leave to dry.

Then pain on a small amount of glue to the end of each feather, front and back.

Sprinkle the glitter over and gently tap off any excess. Do this over some old newspaper to catch the excess and pour back into the pot to save waste.

Leave to dry – you may want to stand them in a small cup or other container so they dry front and back.

It’s as simple as that. You can experiment with different coloured glitter, different fineness of glitter, different types and sizes of feathers.

What will you use yours for?

Wow, what an excellent idea! I'm off to try this now with my little girl. She's only 2, but I'm sure we'll have fun. We can then stick them on some cards we're making.
