Cough with confidence: Let’s talk about stress incontinence

I know that is a bit of a straight to the point title for a blog post; and perhaps you don’t really want to talk about stress incontinence because it is embarrassing, but perhaps we really should do? Perhaps it is something that we shouldn’t all feel as worried about mentioning…

In fact, did you know that urinary incontinence, and stress incontinence in pregnancy is reported to be much higher than you would expect, over 40% in one research study from a few years ago which looked at over 530 scientific articles on the topic.

Stress incontinence isn't something we women talk about opening, but it is much more common that you think, particularly after pregnancy and after birth, so why don't we see if we can help you all?

Stress Incontinence after birth is also quite common, with some suggesting that as many as one in three women experience it.

Exercise and laughing in particular can be a problem for us lovely ladies that have had the joy of giving birth to our little bundles of joy. And as for coughing fits…well…. ;-)

Hartmann Direct provides a discrete way to manage stress incontinence in pregnancy, after birth, during exercise and beyond. The company offers a simple way of buying product, without needing to brave the supermarket isles. In addition, they have an invaluable tool on their site, which enables you to choose which incontinence product is the most suitable for your circumstances;

Stress incontinence in pregnancy is more common than you think; it is also something that occurs after pregnancy too. Hartmann Direct have a great tool to help choose the stress incontinence product that is right for you...

The system runs through six questions covering different aspects of the incontinence you are experiencing to recommend the product that works best for you. Questions relate to:

  • Your gender,
  • How often leakage occurs,
  • What type of experience is had by yourself or the patient, e.g small amount of urine loss, or more prevalent,
  • What time of day the products are required, e.g. day or night,
  • What type of mobility you have, so fully independent and mobile, or someone that is bedridden, and finally,
  • Whether discretion or security is the most important factor for your choice of product.

In my experience, these questions are great for working out which product works best for you, and your requirements. Questions are simple, and explained extremely well, so there is no doubt which answers you should be giving. KiddyCharts were able to try out the MoliMed Comfort range from Hartmann Direct. This range is designed for those experiencing irregular stress incontinence, where discretion and mobility is of high importance in a product. Stress incontinence can occur after exercise in women who have had children, and this type of pad is ideal for managing this.

MoliMed are great for Stress Incontinence; offering a discrete and contoured pad for women. They work well for exercising too!

We found the pads to be comfortable, and discrete. They are contoured, so fit nicely with the body shape, allowing for activities not to be affected by restricted movement. In addition, it was important to have confidence in being able to move well with them in. They have a strong sticky strip at the back which meant that it was unlikely they would move; very important when one is doing star jumps within an aerobics’ class ;-)

Stress incontinence is something that many women have to deal with in pregnancy, and postpartum, so why not make it a little easier with a bit of a helping hand once in a while, when we really need it? Don’t forget those pelvic floor exercises as well; they can massively help to improve control too.

Most importantly though, don’t suffer in silence. Visit the GP as well, and they can give advice to you. Hartmann Direct is one solution on the road to managing the issue, so that it doesn’t affect your life and you can cough with confidence!

Rating: 9/10 – a discrete solution for a problem we ought to be more open about. Kids bring their little challenges, as well as lots of joy after all!
