Me time for mums: Girls Aloud – oh I mean away!

Me time for mums: Not there yet....

Me time for mums: Not there yet….

This last weekend was my biannual girlie weekend away….. it started a number of years ago as a weekend away for a friend’s significant birthday and we have been again a couple of times.

It was lovely and we had a great time. A real treat to have uninterrupted conversations, particularly for those who still have toddlers at home.

The really tough bit was coming home to a tired grumpy eleven year old…claiming he wasn’t tired and telling me I was the worst mother in the world only not quite so politely…..

Still I think on some level I recharged and we have certainly had a good day today apart from a little blip concerning passwords for homework everything else went quite smoothly.

Back to the weekend…

We chatted about all kinds of things, and not all the time about our children. It was great to tap into our other “personas” the people we are other than Mums. It is important to remember those other people we are. Sometimes it just feels they get a little lost with all the business of motherhood.

Its also really encouraging to talk to others who are going through the same things as you. Right from when the children are babies to hear someone else was up for hours in the night and is trying to survive on only a few hours sleep right through to sharing the ups and downs of pubescent pre-teenagers is reassuring. It is always encouraging to learn you are not alone.

Life can be funny sometimes you (well I) long to have a break from the kids, but once away really miss them.

A weekend away is a really special treat, but I do try and get smaller breaks …by organising a girlie meal out, or just doing something for myself and perhaps asking someone else to pick the kids up from school or even having a break and asking hubby to do bed time.

So looking forward to the next time.

Don’t forget you need you time too!
