It’s time for another recipe in 31 days of activities; today we have an idea from Rescue Dog Kitchen. Kid’s can be fussy eaters sometimes but there’s one food that everyone universally loves and agrees on… PIZZA! So we’ve got a twist on the traditional pizza idea that your kids will love: Pizza toast.
Making regular pizza from scratch is a long process that can be quite difficult without the proper tools or training. That’s why I created this super easy kid-friendly pizza toast recipe that you can make your kids or you can watch your kids make it for you. All you need is bread, toppings and an oven! Because an oven is involved in this recipe parental supervision is always recommended.
How to make kid-friendly pizza toast
For this recipe I started with a fresh loaf of Italian bread from the bakery cut 5 medium slices from it. Here lies the beauty of this recipe, I know as a parent you’re busy and sometimes you don’t have all the exact ingredients and that’s okay! There is no wrong way to make pizza toast. If all you have is hot dog buns then make it on hot dog buns. Nothing in life is ever perfect!
There’s a great debate to what the base of pizza should be, pizza sauce or regular tomato sauce, I personally choose to make my Italian mothers tomato pasta sauce as a base, but realistically any tomato/pizza sauce will do. (you can even use pesto or bbq sauce if you have adventurous kids!)
Next layer a few (not too many) mini pepperonis on top of the sauce. Then you want to grate whichever cheese you’re using, I used Myoko’s cashew milk mozzarella, on top of that. Layer a few more pepperonis or whatever other topping you’re using on top of the cheese.
Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet and then place the bread on top of that. Place in your oven at 400 degrees for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted, be careful not to burn! Take out and top with a little bit of chopped basil leaves.
