We did wonder actually if you knew why we do trick or treating at Halloween? We didn’t, so we thought we would check it out….
Why do we give sweet treats at Halloween?
A simple question; but perhaps one that you haven’t really thought about, but have just carried on the tradition without thinking where it actually comes from. Whether you agree or disagree with trick or treating, we’ve all got an opinion on it – but where does it even come from?
Halloween originates from the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in), which is actually on the 1st November. This is know as both All Saints Day, and The Day of the Dead, depending on where you are in the world. The night before is All Hallows Eve, which Celts strongly believed was a kind of boundary day before the New Year began. Resulting in this day being a time when the souls of the dead could move between being alive and dead. The lines blurred between the real world, and the afterlife.
The tradition of trick or treating was born out of this celebration, which evolved through America, and other parts of the world, to become more of a community event. Trick or treating became part of the Halloween celebrations to bring that community feel. It also had the important effect of appeasing both the evil spirits that walked the land on All Hallows Eve, as well as the kids within the community that might be interested in tricking 😂..
