We have a lovely new treat for you today; some koala colouring pages, and other fabulous characters too, from a wonderful new book; Kimmy the Koala Helps the Honey Bees.
This book is written by Graham Swan, who has been kind enough to provide us with a short synopsis of the book for the site.
The characters were originally inspired by a gorilla that I loved in London Zoo as a child, called Guy who was living in a concrete cell. I always had an empathy with Guy and wished to change his circumstances for the better.
Writing stories for my grandchildren brought all that back to me and like previous storytellers what better than to use animals as a vehicle that children understand and empathise with? Children don’t have a problem in their minds with a gorilla talking to a donkey who has a best friend in Ronnie the rat it all makes perfect sense to them, and why not, the world would be a better place if adults had the same attitude?
There are nine characters or friends that live in Summerdown Wood and they all have a story that includes friends helping each other with everyday problems or events that are happening in their lives because that what friends do. Sharing news or learning from each other or helping one another out are all in the stories including the first published book Kimmy the Koala who helps the honey bees.
“Kimmy the Koala loves few things more than honey, eating it for breakfast everyday during the summer months. When he asks the wise tree, Warewood, where his favourite treat comes from though, he is startled to learn the bees who produce the honey are struggling because of the weather. Now determined to help, he recruits Penny the Panda, Ronnie the Rat and his other forest pals to plant wild flowers throughout the woods to give them plenty of pollen to make honey with for the next year.”
Fostering and projecting the importance of honest values in life, from compassion among friends to the vital need to conserve the natural habitats of wildlife or just helping a friend, are universal themes that ordinary people and children can relate to. Hopefully the books reinforce the good things in life, but in a fun way.
